The island of Zakynthos lies about eight miles off the west coast of the Pelopennese. Six islands make up the Ionian islands - Corfu ( Kerkira ), Paxi, Lefkas, Kefalonia, Ithaca and Zakynthos.

Odysseus's route from Troy probably included Corfu (Scheria, the island of the Phaeacians). There he recounted his adventures to Alcinous, the king, and his daughter Nausicaa. Alcinous provided him with a fast ship that took Odysseus back to his native Ithaca - just north-east of Zakynthos.
